Romantic Bollywood Movies to Fall in Love With this Valentine's Day
Posted on 10th February 2016
Bollywood is renowned for colourful, fun movies about love and life – and as Valentine’s Day (not to mention Chakra’s re-opening on Holland Street!) is coming up, we’ve been thinking about some of our favourite romantic Bollywood movies to watch on the run-up to the big day. Check out these romantic Bollywood movies we’re sure you’ll fall in love with!
This classic movie is one of the greats. Set in post-independence India, Pyaasa tells the story of a struggling poet and a prostitute who falls in love with his words.
Love Aaj Kal (2009)
A movie for romantics, Love Aaj Kal is a film about true love and soulmates. Jai and Meera are a young couple who break up when their careers call them to opposite sides of the world and meet other people – but never stop loving each other.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewanin (2013)
A traditional Bollywood romance packed with singing and dancing, this coming-of-age film might be cheesy, but it is joyous. Schoolgirl Naina’s life changes when she meets the fun-loving Bunny and his best friends – but when she falls in love with Bunny, she knows she can’t tie him down.
At once heartbreaking and uplifting, Koshish is a Hindi movie with a difference. A landmark movie in Indian cinema, Koshish (which literally translates as ‘Effort’) follows the lives of a deaf couple who never give up hope, even when tragedy strikes.
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela (2013)
This unusual Bollywood film is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet set in a Gujarati village in violent times. Combining a fantastic musical score with a timeless love story, Ramleela is a fun, stylised movie that deserves the huge amount of awards it won.
Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981)
When a Tamil man falls in love with a North Indian woman, their families are determined to separate them. This is an epic, timeless love story that can make anyone cry buckets.
We hope you have a fantastic Valentine’s Day this weekend. Chakra will be re-opening at our new premises on Holland Street soon!
