#NationalDrinkWineDay: Sample Some Of India's Finest Wine
Posted on 18th February 2016
With today, 18th February, being National Drink Wine Day, there is only one subject we can really focus on for this week’s blog. When you think of wine, you probably think of the fine wines of France, Italy and Spain. Not many of you will automatically think of India, though it is a region which is booming in the wine industry.
If you are looking to partner your homemade curry with a glass of wine, the prestigious Indian Sula Vineyards teamed up with Marks and Spencer to supply a range of wines which will complement. The range has a choice of white, red and rose wines, including:
- Jewel of Nasik Zinfandel Rose: The ideal choice to serve with lightly spiced Indian food and makes the perfect accompaniment to everything from Tiger Prawns to simple salads.
- Jewel of Nasik Tempranillo Shiraz: A vibrant red with the aroma of dark cherry and blackberry. If you are serving a spicy lamb curry or red meat casserole, this would be a great choice.
- Jewel of Nasik Sauvignon Blanc: If you like a crisp white wine, this is the perfect choice. Chill and serve with everything from chilli prawns through to a creamy chicken tikka masala.
About the Sula Vineyards
Located approximately 180km northeast of Mumbai, the Sula Vineyards can be found in India’s largest grape growing region – Nashik. With a climate to rival the famous grape growing regions of Spain, California and Australia, Rajeev Samant founded a winery on the 30 acre estate.
The family took the step of planting French Sauvignon Blanc and Californian Chenin Blanc grapes in 1997 – something which had never been tried before in India. In the year 2000 the first Sula wines were released; with experts describing them as India’s best wines. Since then, Sula have grown to become the leading producer of wine in India; something which has helped see consumption grow by 25% annually.
Since opening the original winery, Rajeev and his family have opened a further 2 sites and this has seen the original 30 acre site expanded to around 1,800 acres. If you ever find yourself in Mumbai, the Sula Vineyards are open to the public for tastings and educational tours, so well worth taking the time to drop in!
